Château Carbonnieux
White

The Great Wine
Grand Cru Classé de Graves

It is said that in the 18th century, Château Carbonnieux Blanc entered the court of the Sultan of Constantinople under the name “Carbonnieux mineral water,” thanks to its great clarity, thus defying Islamic law.

The clay-limestone terroirs with Garonne gravels located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation undoubtedly produce some of the finest dry white wines in the Bordeaux region. In their youth, Carbonnieux whites charm with their freshness, purity, and aromatic intensity, both fruity and floral. With aging, they develop notes of dried and candied fruits, offering a wide range of gastronomic pairings. The lots that make up this classified growth are blended to create a harmonious balance between the grape varieties. The selected Sémillons structure the liveliness of the Sauvignons, bringing roundness and volume on the palate.

The Vintages

Choose a vintage

2023

2023, Precision and dedication
The 2023 vintage was marked by weather conditions relatively in line with long-term averages, both variable and moderate. The arrival of high temperatures at the end of summer allowed optimal ripening. Work focused on the careful selection of harvest dates for each plot.

The wine has a pale yellow color. The nose reveals floral aromas such as lilac and hawthorn, followed after aeration by fruity notes of lemon, grapefruit, and passion fruit. On the palate, the attack is fresh, supported by crisp acidity; the dense, fleshy finish is marked by citrus notes.

2022

2022, Hot and dry
In spring, bud development was promising and flowering occurred under very good conditions. June brought heavy rainfall, followed by exceptionally hot and dry months in July and August. The vines did not suffer significantly, but the grapes eventually lacked water; the berries remained small and concentrated. Yields were therefore low in 2022, but quality levels were very high.

The wine has a pale yellow, almost crystalline color with slightly green reflections. The nose is expressive and fruity, evoking passion fruit and peach. On the palate, the attack is round with good density that should intensify over time. The finish is saline, enhanced by citrus and exotic notes.

10 months in barrels and large casks (25% new oak)

Blend :

60% Sauvignon, 40% Sémillon

2021

2021, Against all expectations
The 2021 vintage will remain in the memories of our winegrowers as a source of pride, as they had to overcome many challenges from nature. About ten nights of frost in April were followed by a typically oceanic summer, mild and humid, conducive to disease development. The precision of our viticultural practices throughout the year made a real difference in 2021. Harvesters were able to pick very fine grapes with everything desired: sweetness, acidity, highly interesting aromatic notes, and normal yields. Against all expectations, 2021 shows great promise.

This wine has a beautiful clear yellow color. The first nose is very pure, initially expressing notes of grapefruit and linden, followed by citrus, especially lemon. The attack is lively and full of freshness; mid-palate, the wine broadens with the appealing richness of Sémillon aged on lees, finishing with a long, fresh, and dense finish.
2021 easily ranks among the great white vintages.

2020

2020, Early and gentle
The particularly mild and rainy autumn-winter of 2019–2020 led to early budburst. This advance continued throughout the vegetative cycle. Flowering was uniform, fruit set was quick and regular, with no coulure or millerandage. The same was true for veraison: early and homogeneous. Ripeness monitoring disrupted summer holidays, with harvest beginning on August 19. Despite constraints from the pandemic and health measures, the harvest posed no major difficulties, as grape quality was sound and ripeness well staggered. 2020 is a fine vintage.

The color is pale yellow, very pure with slight green reflections. The nose is youthful, expressing freshness and the full personality of Sauvignon Blanc with intense citrus aromas. This 2020 surprises with its freshness and liveliness in what was an early vintage. The oak is well integrated, allowing juicy white fruit aromas (pear, peach) to shine. The finish is delightful.

2019

2019, The reward
After two difficult vintages, 2019 closed the decade remarkably. Uniform budburst, steady vine growth, ideal flowering, followed by early summer dryness protected the vineyard from disease. Early August rains arrived at the right time, supporting veraison under excellent conditions, followed by sunshine through harvest.

The excellent ripening conditions of 2019 produced highly aromatic grapes. The style of a great vintage is evident: a powerful, round attack, a dense mid-palate, and a smooth finish. Acidity brings freshness and highlights the finesse and elegance of the wine.

2018

2018, The sun king
The year began with difficulties: hailstorms and heavy rains suggested low yields early on. Then the sun dominated until harvest, producing magnificent grapes. If not abundant, 2018 is nevertheless a great year for Carbonnieux.

The wine is balanced, with a fine concentration of aromas and a remarkable style. Despite the hot, dry climate, it retains the citrus freshness of Sauvignon and the fullness of Sémillon.

2017

2017, A fierce start
At the end of April, an exceptional temperature drop caused frost damage across French vineyards. Château Carbonnieux was not spared, despite its elevated position. Mainly affecting clay-limestone soils, yields were low but of very high quality.

On the nose, citrus and exotic fruits are followed, with aeration, by light vanilla notes alongside Sémillon aromas of white peach, hazelnut, and dried apricot. On the palate, sweetness and acidity balance harmoniously, giving volume. The finish is long, indulgent, and complex.

2016

2016, A winemaker’s delight

2015, The magic of “5”
Bordeaux remembers legendary vintages such as 1945, 1955, 1975, and more recently 1985, 1995, and 2005. Perfect weather throughout the vegetative cycle places 2015 among these iconic “5” vintages.

The attack is generous with bright citrus freshness. The breadth and length on the palate complete the qualities of this great vintage.

2014

2014, From doubt to certainty, a vintage saved by the sun
The climatic reversal between summer and autumn in 2014 is unique in Bordeaux’s history and delighted winemakers. Early flowering and very slow ripening, combined with cool summer conditions that preserved aromas, resulted in a high-quality vintage.

From the first tastings, the great homogeneity of the batches was striking. This is THE Sauvignon vintage, with a minerality to rival the best Sancerres.

2013

2013, A year like no other
A cold, unsettled spring, a very sunny summer, and delayed fruit ripening led to late harvest dates reminiscent of the 1980s. Extremely low yields (the lowest since 1991) challenged winemakers, but consistent sunshine and reinforced harvest teams saved the vintage.

These conditions were ideal for producing great white wines. The wine shows fine minerality and remarkable length on the palate.

2012

2012, A complicated year brought back into balance
Alternating cold, rainy periods with warm, dry spells. Vigorous vines were controlled through canopy management. Initially slowed by cool temperatures, grape development caught up thanks to a dry summer, promoting ripening and concentration.

The vintage is characterized by volume and a generous structure, with classic Sauvignon aromas (boxwood, citrus) and flavorful Sémillon notes of apricot and richness.

2011

2011, A winemaker’s vintage
A sudden shift from winter to summer led to early development and a fine flowering in mid-May. July and August were less sunny and sometimes humid. This was not an easy vintage, requiring close monitoring and real expertise. Yet, despite the unusual climate, the white wines are remarkable and the reds highly successful.

Cool conditions during ripening gave the 2011 whites their bright acidity and aromatic intensity.

2010, Exceptional
After the highly praised 2009, it was difficult to announce that 2010 would be even better. Today, it is clear that 2010 ranks among Bordeaux’s legendary vintages. An exceptionally dry summer with moderate heat played a major role.

2008

2008, The signature of Bordeaux’s climate
A capricious climate due to oceanic influence, yet nothing to fear: the vine adapts when well managed. A wet spring limited yields, July dryness created beneficial water stress, and a cool late summer preserved aromas.

Superb: Sauvignon grapes that are sweet, acidic, and fruity, and exceptionally rounded Sémillon.

2007
